An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred only 10 minutes ago 64 km east of Ishinomaki, Japan, Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 28.60 km beneath the epicenter near Ishinomaki, Ishinomaki Shi, Miyagi, Japan, in the morning on Monday, May 26th, 2025, at 9:56 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Onagawa Cho (pop. 6,400) located 51 km from the epicenter, Ishinomaki (pop. 138,500) 64 km away, Ofunato (pop. 35,500) 68 km away, Tome (pop. 77,900) 79 km away, Ichinoseki (pop. 114,500) 90 km away, Osaki (pop. 128,800) 92 km away, Kurihara (pop. 66,600) 93 km away, Furukawa (pop. 76,300) 94 km away, and Sendai (pop. 1,096,700) 105 km away.
