In-brief analysis

June 16, 2025

Data source: U.S. Energy Information Administration analysis based on Vortexa tanker tracking
Note: 1Q25=first quarter of 2025

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Oman and Iran, connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. The strait is deep enough and wide enough to handle the world’s largest crude oil tankers, and it is one of the world’s most important oil chokepoints. Large volumes of oil flow through the strait, and very few alternative options exist to move oil out of the strait if it is closed. In 2024, oil flow through the strait averaged 20 million barrels per day (b/d), or the equivalent of about 20% of global petroleum liquids consumption. In the first quarter of 2025, total oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz remained

A magnitude 2.9 earthquake near Tomaszow Mazowiecki, Tomaszów County, Wojewodztwo Lodzkie, Poland, was reported only 6 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Monday, June 16th, 2025, at 3:47 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mniszkow (pop. 530) located 5 km from the epicenter, Sulejow (pop. 6,300) 8 km away, Tomaszow Mazowiecki (pop. 67,200) 15 km away, Piotrkow Trybunalski (pop. 80,100) 19 km away, and Opoczno (pop. 22,600) 21 km away. In Konskie (pop. 20,800, 38 km away), Belchatow (pop. 62,900, 43 km away), Rawa Mazowiecka (pop. 17,800, 45 km away), and Lodz (pop. 768,800, 54 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
