An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred early afternoon on Friday, June 13th, 2025, at 3:18 pm local time near Chiba, Chiba Shi, Japan, as reported by Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 74.50 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Makuhari (pop. 28,700) located 4 km from the epicenter, Narashino (pop. 176,200) 5 km away, Yotsukaido (pop. 95,300) 7 km away, Chiba (pop. 979,800) 8 km away, Yachiyo (pop. 199,500) 8 km away, Sakura (pop. 173,700) 14 km away, Kamagaya (pop. 109,900) 14 km away, Ichihara (pop. 283,500) 17 km away, Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 37 km away, and Yokohama (pop. 3,761,600) 48 km away.
