A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported after midnight near Trento, Province of Trente, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Wednesday, May 21st, 2025, at 12:37 am local time at a shallow depth of 14. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Swiss Seismological Service (SED) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Rovereto (pop. 34,200) located 2 km from the epicenter, Mori (pop. 7,700) 8 km away, Riva del Garda (pop. 17,300) 17 km away, and Trento (pop. 120,700) 19 km away. In Schio (pop. 33,700, 31 km away), Valdagno (pop. 22,600, 34 km away), Thiene (pop. 21,100, 39 km away), Verona (pop. 258,000, 51 km away), and Vicenza (pop. 112,000, 54 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
