The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.4 quake in Papua New Guinea near Vanimo, Vanimo-Green River District, West Sepik Province, only 7 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Saturday, May 3rd, 2025, at 3:10 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Vanimo (pop. 11,200) located 83 km from the epicenter, Abepura (pop. 62,200) 97 km away, and Jayapura (pop. 404,000) 99 km away.
