Just 11 minutes ago, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Erimo, Horoizumi-gun, Hokkaido, Japan. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025, at 8:21 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface.
The event was filed by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Erimo (pop. 4,400) located 106 km from the epicenter.

A shallow magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported early morning near Catbalogan, Samar, Eastern Visayas, Philippines.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the quake hit on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025, at 6:10 am local time at a shallow depth of 12. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Dapdap (pop. 2,200) located 17 km from the epicenter, Dolores (pop. 9,300) 17 km away, and Can-Avid (pop. 5,900) 21 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Oras (pop. 9,000) located 25 km from the epicenter, and Borongan (pop. 16,500) 52 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Catbalogan (pop. 68,100) located 87 km from the epicenter, Laoang (pop. 16,700) 91
