Just 18 minutes ago, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Cogan, Cebu, Central Visayas, Philippines. The tremor was recorded early morning on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, at 2:50 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Esperanza (pop. 5,300) located 15 km from the epicenter, Cogan (pop. 57,900) 26 km away, and Danao (pop. 70,300) 31 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Liloan (pop. 49,200) located 44 km from the epicenter, Consolacion (pop. 48,600) 49 km away, Ormoc (pop. 191,200) 54 km away, Lapu-Lapu City (pop. 350,500) 56 km away, Mandaue City (pop. 331,300) 56 km away, and Cebu City (pop. 964,200) 58 km away.
