Antigua and Barbuda was shaken near St John’s, Parish of Saint John, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 20 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 43. km beneath the epicenter near St John’s, Parish of Saint John, Antigua & Barbuda, around noon on Friday, April 18th, 2025, at 1:31 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Codrington (pop. 1,300) located 17 km from the epicenter, Codrington (pop. 1,300) 18 km away, St John’s (pop. 24,200) 52 km away, Potters Village (pop. 1,400) 53 km away, All Saints (pop. 2,500) 59 km away, Basseterre (pop. 12,900) 85 km away, and Gustavia
