An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred after midnight on Monday, April 28th, 2025, at 12:54 am local time near Sanchez-Mira, Cagayan, Cagayan Valley, Philippines, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2 as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Namuac (pop. 3,000) located 69 km from the epicenter, Claveria (pop. 10,600) 69 km away, Sanchez-Mira (pop. 26,200) 76 km away, Cabaritan East (pop. 9,300) 99 km away, Aparri (pop. 33,200) 112 km away, Laoag (pop. 102,100) 127 km away, and San Nicolas
