Just 3 minutes ago, a 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Sunday, May 18th, 2025, at 2:59 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 1.97 km below the surface.
The event was filed by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Arette (pop. 1,200) located 3 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Oloron-Sainte-Marie (pop. 12,600) located 15 km from the epicenter. In Mauleon-Licharre (pop. 3,300, 23 km away), Gan (pop. 5,400, 30 km away), Mourenx (pop. 8,100, 33 km away), Billere (pop. 14,900, 35 km away), Lons (pop. 13,900, 35 km away), Lescar (pop. 9,700, 36 km away), and Pau (pop. 82,700, 38 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
