Just 15 minutes ago, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Rio Turbio, Güer Aike Department, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Monday, May 12th, 2025, at 9:48 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 35. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by The National Seismological Center (Centro Sismológico Nacional, CSN) of the University of Chile, which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.1, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In 28 de Noviembre (pop. 4,700) located 35 km from the epicenter, Rio Turbio (pop. 6,700) 41 km away, and Yacimientos Rio Turbio (pop. 6,700) 41 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Puerto Natales (pop. 20,000) located 61 km from the epicenter, and El Calafate (pop. 8,000) 125 km
