An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred around noon on Saturday, May 3rd, 2025, at 12:55 pm local time near Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Central Visayas, Philippines, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Dauin (pop. 3,300) located 12 km from the epicenter, Dumaguete (pop. 113,500) 16 km away, Sibulan (pop. 28,100) 17 km away, Tanjay (pop. 82,600) 30 km away, Santa Catalina (pop. 26,500) 35 km away, Bais (pop. 65,600) 38 km away, and Bayawan (pop. 122,700) 42 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Dapitan (pop. 85,200) located 72 km from the epicenter.

Lewotolo (Lesser Sunda Islands): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 6000 ft (1800 m) altitude or flight level 060 and is moving at 05 kts in W direction.
