An earthquake of magnitude 2.6 occurred late at night on Tuesday, April 15th, 2025, at 11:05 pm local time near Athens, Nomarchía Athínas, Attica, Greece, as reported by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.6 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 2.6, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 2.6.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Skourta (pop. 980) located 8 km from the epicenter, Aspropyrgos (pop. 30,300) 10 km away, Acharnes (pop. 99,300) 15 km away, Petroupolis (pop. 59,000) 15 km away, and Petroúpolis (pop. 59,000) 15 km away. In Ilion (pop. 84,800, 16 km away), Peristeri (pop. 140,000, 18 km
