France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) reported a magnitude 5.5 quake in Afghanistan near Fayzabad, Fayzabad District, Badakhshan, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Saturday, April 19th, 2025, at 11:48 am local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 170.64 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.8 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.8, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Shkhowr (pop. 450) located 28 km from the epicenter, Ishqoshim (pop. 26,000) 31 km away, Ashkasham (pop. 12,100) 32 km away, Khandud (pop. 5,500) 68 km away, Jurm (pop. 12,100) 96 km away, Fayzabad (pop. 44,400) 129 km away, and Fayzabad (pop. 44,400) 129 km away.
