Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes near Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Davao, Philippines

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 5.1 quake in the Philippines near Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Davao, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Friday, May 2nd, 2025, at 6:26 am local time at an intermediate depth of 93. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.2, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sarangani (pop. 7,500) located 71 km from the epicenter, and Caburan (pop. 12,600) 84 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Alabel (pop. 43,300) located 125 km from the epicenter.
