Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 5.3 quake in India near Churachandpur, Manipur, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Wednesday, May 28th, 2025, at 1:24 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 66. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.3, and France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Churachandpur (pop. 47,800) located 6 km from the epicenter, Moirang (pop. 17,100) 17 km away, Kakching (pop. 30,400) 30 km away, Mayang Imphal (pop. 22,200) 33 km away, Thoubal (pop. 44,500) 42 km away, Wangjing (pop. 7,500) 43 km away, Yairipok (pop. 8,800) 49 km away, Silchar (pop. 152,400) 108 km
