A shallow magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported around noon near Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Tuesday, May 27th, 2025, at 12:17 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Sampaloc (pop. 20,200) located 20 km from the epicenter, Rodriguez (pop. 134,400) 23 km away, San Mateo (pop. 134,300) 31 km away, and Antipolo City (pop. 549,500) 33 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Taytay (pop. 231,500) located 35 km from the epicenter, Cainta (pop. 283,200) 35 km away, Binangonan (pop. 219,200) 36 km away, Quezon City (pop. 2,761,700) 40 km away, Manila (pop. 1,600,000) 48 km away, and Calamba (pop. 539,700) 62 km
