A moderately shallow magnitude 6.0 earthquake was reported early morning near Irakleion, Heraklion, Crete, Greece.
According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Thursday, May 22nd, 2025, at 6:19 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 36.50 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 6.3, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 6.5, and The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 6.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Sitia (pop. 8,700) located 59 km from the epicenter, Agios Nikolaos (pop. 11,400) 60 km away, Nea Alikarnassos (pop. 12,900) 78 km away, Ierapetra (pop. 12,400) 79 km away, Irakleion (pop. 137,200) 80 km away, Gazi (pop. 12,600) 86 km away,
