An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred after midnight on Thursday, May 8th, 2025, at 12:41 am local time near Gamay, Northern Samar, Eastern Visayas, Philippines, as reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 24. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Anito (pop. 2,100) located 83 km from the epicenter, Mapanas (pop. 3,600) 84 km away, Gamay (pop. 9,100) 86 km away, Arteche (pop. 5,000) 87 km away, Palapag (pop. 8,300) 95 km away, Oras (pop. 9,000) 95 km away, and Laoang (pop. 16,700) 104 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience

A magnitude 2.9 earthquake near Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia, was reported 36 minutes ago by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Australia. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles beneath the epicenter early morning on Thursday, May 8th, 2025, at 2:18 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.9 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Peterborough (pop. 240, 16 miles away), Allansford (pop. 1,500, 21 miles away), Warrnambool (pop. 29,200, 22 miles away), Timboon (pop. 1,200, 25 miles away), Dennington (pop. 1,800, 25 miles away), Port Fairy (pop. 3,300, 29 miles away), Koroit (pop. 2,000, 30 miles away), and Terang (pop. 2,200, 35 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

If you felt it, report it through our site or app right now!
