An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred only 17 minutes ago 45 miles southeast of King Cove, Alaska, United States, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 22 miles beneath the epicenter near King Cove, Aleutians East, Alaska, USA, early morning on Monday, May 19th, 2025, at 4:06 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0 as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in King Cove (pop. 1000) located 45 miles from the epicenter, Cold Bay (pop. 120) 61 miles away, and False Pass (pop. 40) 71 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sand Point (pop. 1,100) located
