Just 29 minutes ago, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Naze, Amami Shi, Kagoshima-ken, Japan. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Saturday, July 12th, 2025, at 11:01 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 4.5, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tatsugo (pop. 6,000) located 99 km from the epicenter, and Naze (pop. 41,400) 107 km away.
