An earthquake of magnitude 2.5 occurred only 12 minutes ago 24 miles east of Melbourne, Australia, Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 4.2 miles beneath the epicenter near Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, after midnight on Tuesday, May 6th, 2025, at 12:30 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 2.6 earthquake.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Healesville (pop. 7,400, 12 miles away), Glen Waverly (pop. 42,600, 14 miles away), Burwood (pop. 14,900, 16 miles away), Balwyn North (pop. 20,000, 17 miles away), Caulfield South (pop. 11,600, 21 miles away), Melbourne (pop. 4,917,800, 24 miles away), Fawkner (pop. 14,300, 24 miles away), Frankston East (pop. 34,500, 27 miles away), and St Albans (pop. 37,600, 33 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
