An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred only 22 minutes ago 17 km northwest of Quito, Ecuador, the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5. km beneath the epicenter near Quito, Pichincha, Ecuador, early morning on Saturday, April 12th, 2025, at 2:11 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Colombian Geological Service (SGC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.0, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Quito (pop. 2,781,600) located 17 km from the epicenter, Pomasqui (pop. 28,700) 22 km away, and Sangolqui (pop. 5,100) 31 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Oyambarillo (pop.
