An intermediate magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported late at night near Kukichuo, Kuki-shi, Saitama, Japan.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Monday, April 21st, 2025, at 10:11 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 110. km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 4.4, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.7.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Washinomiya (pop. 36,500) located 4 km from the epicenter, Satte (pop. 55,300) 4 km away, Kukichuo (pop. 73,400) 4 km away, Kazo (pop. 112,800) 9 km away, Koga (pop. 139,300) 9 km away, Kasukabe (pop. 206,900) 14 km away, Iwatsuki (pop. 108,800) 15 km away, Saitama (pop. 1,324,900) 22 km away, Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 46 km away, and Yokohama (pop.
