The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 3.1 quake in Switzerland near Thun, Thun District, Canton de Berne, only 6 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Sunday, May 4th, 2025, at 1:30 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 8.90 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Swiss Seismological Service (SED), which listed it as a magnitude 3.3 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lauterbrunnen (pop. 2,600) located 10 km from the epicenter, Grindelwald (pop. 3,700) 11 km away, Naters (pop. 7,600) 23 km away, and Spiez (pop. 12,600) 29 km away. In Thun (pop. 42,100, 38 km away), Steffisburg (pop. 15,700, 39 km away), Sierre (pop. 15,800, 44 km away), Kriens (pop. 25,000, 60 km away), Luzern (pop. 81,700, 62 km away), and Bern (pop. 121,600, 62 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
