Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported a magnitude 3.6 quake in Italy near Piacenza, Province of Piacenza, Emilia-Romagna, only 16 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Sunday, May 4th, 2025, at 8:29 am local time at a shallow depth of 25.40 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.5. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 3.0, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.6.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bettola (pop. 3,200) located 9 km from the epicenter, Salsomaggiore Terme (pop. 15,800) 21 km away, Fidenza (pop. 22,000) 29 km away, Piacenza (pop. 103,600) 31 km away, Cremona (pop. 71,200) 46 km away, and Parma (pop. 198,300) 48 km away. In Lodi (pop. 40,800, 62 km away), Pavia (pop. 65,700, 64 km away), and Genoa (pop. 580,100, 74 km away), the quake was probably not felt.

Just 20 minutes ago, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Nikolski, Aleutians West, Alaska, USA. The tremor was recorded late at night on Saturday, May 3rd, 2025, at 10:12 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 24 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Nikolski (pop. 18) located 12 miles from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
