An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred late at night on Thursday, May 15th, 2025, at 10:05 pm local time near Kushiro, Kushiro Shi, Hokkaido, Japan, as reported by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 100.39 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Honcho (pop. 5,000) located 18 km from the epicenter, Shiranuka (pop. 8,000) 23 km away, Ikeda (pop. 6,900) 36 km away, Kushiro (pop. 167,900) 44 km away, Sarubetsu (pop. 25,800) 44 km away, Obihiro (pop. 166,500) 56 km away, Otofuke (pop. 44,200) 58 km away, and Memuro-minami (pop. 18,000) 69
