A shallow magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported in the evening near Kendari, Kota Kendari, Sulawesi Tenggara, Indonesia.
According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake hit on Friday, May 9th, 2025, at 9:14 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kendari (pop. 345,100) located 97 km from the epicenter, Katobu (pop. 31,900) 99 km away, and Raha (pop. 70,000) 100 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
