An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred in the morning on Tuesday, June 17th, 2025, at 11:13 am local time near Eagle River, Anchorage, Alaska, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 12 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.6 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Knik River (pop. 740) located 29 miles from the epicenter, Lazy Mountain (pop. 1,500) 34 miles away, Butte (pop. 3,200) 35 miles away, and Sutton-Alpine (pop. 1,400) 36 miles away. In Palmer (pop. 6,800, 38 miles away), Gateway (pop. 5,600, 42 miles away), Eagle River (pop. 24,800, 51 miles away), Eagle River (pop. 24,800, 51 miles away), and Knik-Fairview (pop. 14,900, 52

BOTHELL, Wash. –  The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) authorized the use of federal funds to help with firefighting costs for the Alder Springs Fire burning in Jefferson County, Oregon.

The state of Oregon’s request for a declaration under FEMA’s Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) program was approved by FEMA Region 10 Acting Administrator Vincent J. Maykovich on Monday, June 16, 2025, at 10:27 p.m. PT. He determined that the Alder Springs Fire threatened to cause such destruction as would constitute a major disaster. This is the second FMAG declaration in 2025 to help fight Oregon wildfires.

At the time of the state’s request, the wildfire threatened homes in and around the communities of Crooked River Ranch and Redmond.

FMAGs make funding available to pay up to 75 percent of a state’s eligible firefighting costs for fires that threaten to become major disasters. Eligible items can include expenses for field camps, equipment use, materials, supplies and mobilization and demobilization activities attributed to fighting the fire. These grants do not provide assistance to individual home or business owners and do not cover other infrastructure damage caused by the fire.
