An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred only 4 minutes ago 48 miles southwest of Fairbanks, Alaska, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 4.5 miles beneath the epicenter near Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star, Alaska, USA, in the afternoon on Monday, May 5th, 2025, at 4:17 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Four Mile Road (pop. 43) located 4 miles from the epicenter, and Nenana (pop. 380) 6 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Anderson (pop. 270) located 19 miles from the epicenter, and Ester (pop.
