An earthquake of magnitude 2.9 occurred only 4 minutes ago 8 km southeast of Avignon, France, France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5. km beneath the epicenter near Avignon, Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur, France, early morning on Tuesday, May 13th, 2025, at 5:35 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 2.9 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Morieres-les-Avignon (pop. 7,000) located 2 km from the epicenter, and Le Pontet (pop. 16,200) 5 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Avignon (pop. 89,800) located 8 km from the epicenter, Sorgues (pop. 18,700) 10 km away, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (pop. 17,000) 12 km away, Cavaillon (pop. 26,700) 15 km away, and Carpentras (pop. 29,700) 19

The access road becomes covered with water. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS… – At 1100 PM EDT Monday, the stage was 15.8 feet. – Forecast…The river is expected to rise to a crest of 16.2 feet early Tuesday morning. – Flood stage is 11.0 feet.
