Just 7 minutes ago, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Bengkulu, Kota Bengkulu, Indonesia. The tremor was recorded early morning on Friday, May 23rd, 2025, at 2:52 am local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 55. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.8. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Bengkulu (pop. 373,600) located 42 km from the epicenter, Curup (pop. 46,200) 85 km away, and Pagar Alam (pop. 70,400) 114 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Lubuklinggau (pop. 234,200) located 121 km from the epicenter.
