An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 occurred early morning on Friday, May 2nd, 2025, at 5:49 am local time near Khasavyurt, RU.17.Gorod Khasavyurt, Dagestan, Russia, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 3.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Novyy Kostek (pop. 4,000) located 9 km from the epicenter, Kostek (pop. 4,100) 10 km away, Chontaul (pop. 8,200) 14 km away, Mutsalaul (pop. 6,200) 15 km away, Babayurt (pop. 13,900) 21 km away, Khasavyurt (pop. 126,800) 24 km away, and Kizilyurt (pop. 33,400) 24 km away.
