An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred only 8 minutes ago 70 km southeast of Biak, Indonesia, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Biak, Biak Numfor Regency, Papua, Indonesia, early morning on Thursday, May 8th, 2025, at 2:49 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Biak (pop. 4,500) located 70 km from the epicenter, and Insrom (pop. 3,500) 76 km away.

An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred after midnight on Thursday, May 8th, 2025, at 12:41 am local time near Gamay, Northern Samar, Eastern Visayas, Philippines, as reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 24. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
