A shallow magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported early morning near Maitland, Maitland Municipality, New South Wales, Australia.
According to Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the quake hit on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025, at 2:55 am local time at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Singleton (pop. 5,100) located 12 miles from the epicenter, Singleton Heights (pop. 4,600) 13 miles away, Wattle Ponds (pop. 1,100) 16 miles away, and Cessnock (pop. 15,100) 21 miles away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
