France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) reported a magnitude 5.1 quake in Japan near Kamisu, Kamisu-shi, Ibaraki, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Monday, April 7th, 2025, at 9:52 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kamisu (pop. 95,500) located 22 km from the epicenter, Kashima-shi (pop. 67,000) 24 km away, Hasaki (pop. 39,200) 24 km away, Choshi (pop. 58,400) 24 km away, Asahi (pop. 64,700) 34 km away, Katori-shi (pop. 74,500) 37 km away, Sawara (pop. 47,200) 37 km away, and Hokota (pop. 46,000) 42 km away, the quake should have been felt as
