Just 8 minutes ago, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Nagano, Nagano Shi, Japan. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Friday, April 18th, 2025, at 8:19 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 11.60 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Matsumoto (pop. 239,500) located 27 km from the epicenter, Nagano (pop. 360,200) 31 km away, Ueda (pop. 157,500) 34 km away, and Shiojiri (pop. 67,200) 41 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Saku (pop. 99,100) located 58 km from the epicenter, Takayama (pop. 88,500) 70 km away, Ina (pop. 68,200) 71 km away, and Joetsu (pop. 189,400) 81 km away.
