Just 12 minutes ago, a 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Maitland, Maitland Municipality, New South Wales, Australia. The tremor was recorded early morning on Tuesday, April 8th, 2025, at 5:18 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 2.4 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mount Thorley (pop. 71) located 4 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Singleton (pop. 5,100) located 9 miles from the epicenter, Singleton Heights (pop. 4,600) 10 miles away, Wattle Ponds (pop. 1,100) 12 miles away, Cessnock (pop. 15,100) 19 miles away, and Heddon Greta (pop. 2,000) 26 miles away. In Maitland (pop. 67,100, 27 miles away), and Muswellbrook (pop. 12,100, 31 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
