A shallow magnitude 5.2 earthquake was reported early morning near Banga, South Cotabato, Soccsksargen, Philippines.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Sunday, April 20th, 2025, at 1:37 am local time at a shallow depth of 12.84 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency at magnitude 4.9, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) at magnitude 5.7, France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.2, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.3, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.3.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the
