An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred only 14 minutes ago 79 km west of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 34. km beneath the epicenter near Banda Aceh, Kota Banda Aceh, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province, Indonesia, in the morning on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025, at 10:27 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Thailand’s Earthquake Observation Division (TMD), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Banda Aceh (pop. 255,000) located 79 km from the epicenter, and Sabang (pop. 42,100) 90 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience
