Just 4 minutes ago, a 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Valdez, Chugach, Alaska, USA. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Monday, May 12th, 2025, at 9:35 am local time, at a shallow depth of 17 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.6 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tatitlek (pop. 88) located 28 miles from the epicenter. In Valdez (pop. 3,900, 41 miles away), and Girdwood (pop. 2,300, 56 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
