An earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred early morning on Friday, May 9th, 2025, at 6:06 am local time near Hawkwood, North Burnett, Queensland, Australia, as reported by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.8 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Hawkwood (pop. 18, 19 miles away), Cadarga (pop. 16, 23 miles away), and Wandoan (pop. 1,100, 40 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
