A shallow magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported around noon near Trikala, Thessaly, Greece.
According to The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH), the quake hit on Thursday, May 15th, 2025, at 1:54 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Metsovo (pop. 2,500) located 23 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Trikala (pop. 61,700) located 44 km from the epicenter, Arta (pop. 21,900) 51 km away, Karditsa (pop. 32,800) 61 km away, Preveza (pop. 17,300) 81 km away, and Kozani (pop. 36,500) 93 km away.
