An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred early morning on Tuesday, May 6th, 2025, at 3:40 am local time near Chambery, Savoy, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, France, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Swiss Seismological Service (SED), which listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Le Cheylas (pop. 2,300) located 2 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chambery (pop. 61,600) located 21 km from the epicenter, Meylan (pop. 20,300) 25 km away, Saint-Martin-d’Heres (pop. 35,500) 28 km away, Saint-Martin-d’Hères (pop. 35,500) 29 km
