A very shallow magnitude 3.6 earthquake was reported after midnight near Dubrovnik, City of Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Croatia.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Friday, May 23rd, 2025, at 12:52 am local time at a very shallow depth of 0.10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), which listed it as a magnitude 3.4 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.1, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 3.1, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.0, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Dunave Krajnje (pop. 150) located 3 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as
