Warm and very dry conditions are expected this afternoon, with humidity levels as low as 15 to 25 percent. Coupled with southeast to south winds gusting up to 20 to 25 mph, fire danger conditions will be elevated and may reach near critical levels. Fire danger will be greatest in localized areas where more prevalent dry or dormant grasses are still receptive to fire starts and spread. Winds will remain breezy or even increase further through the overnight and humidity levels will be slow to recover, so fire danger may remain elevated during the nighttime hours. An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred in the afternoon on Saturday, May 10th, 2025, at 5:16 pm local time near Manokwari, Manokwari Regency, Provinsi Papua Barat, Indonesia, as reported by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bintuni (pop. 24,700) located 52 km from the epicenter, and Ransiki (pop. 16,200) 55 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Manokwari (pop. 107,300) located 99 km from the epicenter.
