THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED TORNADO WATCH 227 IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM MDT THIS EVENING FOR THE FOLLOWING AREAS IN NEW MEXICO THIS WATCH INCLUDES 3 COUNTIES IN EAST CENTRAL NEW MEXICO DE BACA ROOSEVELT IN SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO CHAVES THIS INCLUDES THE CITIES OF BITTER LAKE WILDLIFE REFUGE, FORT SUMNER, MIDWAY, PORTALES, ROSWELL, AND YESO.

At 428 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over Apopka, moving east at 15 mph. HAZARD…Wind gusts up to 40 mph and half inch hail. SOURCE…Radar indicated. IMPACT…Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include… Orlando, Apopka, Altamonte Springs, Ocoee, and Winter Garden.

Atmospheric conditions exist that favor the possible formation of cold air funnel clouds. These occur in vertically developed clouds, which usually are not associated with thunderstorms. They may persist for an extended period before dissipating. Low hanging clouds can also appear to dip up and down at times, but they will not show signs of any rapid rotation. An actual funnel cloud will exhibit spinning in a counter-clockwise direction. In rare instances these funnels may briefly touch down. Stay alert and be prepared to move to a safe shelter if a funnel cloud approaches the ground.
