An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred in the evening on Friday, April 18th, 2025, at 8:19 pm local time near Nagano, Nagano Shi, Japan, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Matsumoto (pop. 239,500) located 31 km from the epicenter, Nagano (pop. 360,200) 31 km away, Ueda (pop. 157,500) 38 km away, and Shiojiri (pop. 67,200) 46 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Saku (pop. 99,100) located 63 km from the epicenter, Takayama (pop. 88,500) 70 km away, Joetsu (pop. 189,400) 78 km away, and Takaoka (pop. 170,100) 82 km away.
