A very shallow magnitude 3.8 earthquake was reported after midnight near Provo, Utah County, Utah, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday, May 1st, 2025, at 12:11 am local time at a very shallow depth of 3.4 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Independence (pop. 170) located 3 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Springville (pop. 32,300) located 18 miles from the epicenter, Provo (pop. 115,300) 19

An unsettled weather pattern remains in store for Palau and Yap through at least the weekend, as two tropical disturbances known as Invests 99W and 90W remain to be the primary weather makers in western Micronesia. JTWC’s Invest 99W is currently centered near 8N131E west-northwest of Palau’s coastal waters, continuing its trek away from the region as monsoon-like flow continues to bring heavy showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds to the region for the next several days. Due to the continuous delays in potential tropical cyclone development, shower coverage is expected to continue to diminish along the southeastern peripheries, which brings diminished shower coverage to much of Palau. However, showers and thunderstorms
