A moderately shallow magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported early evening near Anjo, Anjō-shi, Aichi-ken, Japan.
According to Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the quake hit on Tuesday, April 8th, 2025, at 7:26 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 35.50 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Anjo (pop. 188,700) located 4 km from the epicenter, Okazaki (pop. 384,700) 6 km away, Nishio (pop. 170,000) 9 km away, Chiryu (pop. 72,200) 10 km away, Kariya (pop. 153,800) 12 km away, Handa (pop. 117,900) 16 km away, Toyota (pop. 426,200) 17 km away, and Nagoya (pop. 2,332,200) 33 km away.

Indiana University Indianapolis, School of Science Department of Physics invites applications for an endowed professorship in physics. The appointment will begin August 1, 2025 (or earlier) on the Indianapolis campus. The successful candidate will be the Inaugural Meiere Professor of Physics. The Chair includes a significant annual funding stream that can be used for a wide variety of purposes, within limits of Indiana University policy.

The search is part of a major expansion of the research profile of IU Indianapolis. We expect close collaboration with the newly established Convergent Bioscience and Technology Institute at Indiana University Indianapolis (CBATI).
